Chelsea Flower show is the most prestigious flower show on earth. 2011 featured FSC wood – which is wood that is ethically sourced from a certified timber supplier.
The FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) had an exhibit themselves this year called “Linking gardens to forests”. The wooden products used in the exhibit were all FSC certified and were items that could typically be found in any garden. The point was to encourage visitors to think about where their wood is sourced from. The RHS awarded it the Bronze Lindley medal.
A Turning table/Seat Set made from English FSC Sweet Chestnut from a wood in Herefordshire was shown on the National Trust stand and show gardens such as The cancer Research UK garden and the Laurent Perrier Garden had wood from ethically sourced suppliers,.
The way that your wood products are sourced is very important. From garden furniture sets to wooden planters, the wood should come from somewhere that is sustainable and somewhere that respects the rights of the indigenous population.
Whilst wood was popular, other materials were also used for furniture. The British heart Foundation showed garden beanbags, The Principality of Monaco had fabric sun loungers and the Failte Ireland, Cork City Council garden had perhaps the wackiest garden furniture which was a pink metal seating area that could be raised in the air for fantastic views of the garden which was designed by Diarmuid Gavin.
Hanging seats were also popular and were shown in the Chilstone of Tunbridge Wells Garden, accessorised with funky blue cushions.
Whilst the furniture exhibited at Chelsea can often be expensive, there are cheaper alternatives available from your local garden centre that can be a great feature to your garden at home.
The Chelsea Flower Show is a great source of inspiration for your garden – from what furniture to choose to what planting looks good with it. If you get the chance to attend the show for yourself, it is definitely worth your efforts.
