Now That Spring Is Finally Here, There Are Plenty Of Excuses To Go Out Of The House And Soak Up The Sunshine
At last it looks like spring is almost here, and after a couple of days of thick frost and freezing evenings, this lunchtime the sun is shining and the sky is free of clouds. Although I have a thousand things to do indoors, the chance to feel the warm sunlight has proved to be a big distraction and I’ve just been out walking for a while.
Even though I live in quite a large village, it’s always peaceful during in the daytime, and after crossing the main road near my house I am at once on a footpath leading over the fields. There is a small incline initially and once I’ve walked over that there is virtually no human sound evident at all.
This track is my most loved local walk. Over the first field, heading down to cross a rarely used back lane, and then another climb across a second field which ends up at a compact wood on the summit of the hill. The woods are private property, but the owners encourage the locals to walk in them by providing stiles to get over the fence, marked pathways and a couple of benches for the walker who wishes to take a brief breather.
When it’s summer, the trees are thick with greenery, and squirrels and birds consider the place their own. Many of the trees in the wood are sweet chestnuts and when we reach autumn the ground is a carpet of crushed fruits. But spring hasn’t yet taken hold and at the moment the branches are bare and the wildlife is mute apart from a few birds in the distance.
This lunchtime I have another reason for wanting to visit the woods. A friend and I have offered to come up with a video to go with an acoustic song recorded by some musicians we know. We have a concept, but have had to hang on for the right conditions to take some video footage and this is the first occasion when the weather has been good enough to film in the sunshine.
Unfortunately, my friend is at work, so I have to depend on my video talents. The filming is time consuming because I have defective eyesight, so I need to wear my glasses to operate the video equipment, but remove them to look at things that are further away to be able to see what I’m capturing on film. It’s really quite irritating! On occasions I ponder whether I should ask about Laser eye surgery, but I’m not even sure if Laser eye treatment is appropriate for whatever the problem is, and anyway, I believe it’s a bit expensive.
In any case, I have stuck at it and should now have enough images for us to start making the video. I have filmed the sunlight breaking through the trees, the path heading through the woods, the vast sweep of the fields leading to the marshes and the river some distance away, and the huge cargo ships slowly finding their way up the river to dock further upstream (though that final bit isn’t for our film concept!).
However, my friend has very good eyesight, so when we start on the intricate task of editing all the images together with the indoor footage we shot a few days ago, she will do most of the work leaving me and my ropey vision to watch and comment on rough cuts, and edit the music if and when necessary. Thankfully, my ears more than make up for my eyes, and I have very good hearing as well as a well tuned musical ear. Maybe I should avoid the concept of Laser eye surgery just in case my hearing gets worse when it’s done so that my eyes and ears are back on level ground!
In any case, the video will soon be finished and uploaded to various relevant music websites, and maybe people will be impressed by it. It would be great to get some decent feedback and perhaps be given the option to interact with the same artists again. And possibly we could actually make some money from it, and then I could afford to explore the concept of Laser eye treatment, so that I can shoot video for new projects without the constant requirement to take my glasses on and off countless times.
